    Name Meaning

    Altered form of French Matha: habitational name from a place in Charente-Maritime.

    Indian (mainly southern states): Brahmin name found in Kon Seema region, from Sanskrit mantha ‘churner’. According to legend, churning the ‘ocean of milk’ is a way to obtain the elixir of immortality.

    History: Many of the American bearers of the surname Mantha are descendants of Guillaume Imb(e)ault dit Matha from the Saintonge region of France, who married Louise-Marie Chorau in QC in 1703.
