William James Stanley Howell was born on 21 April 1879, in New Zealand as the son of John Howell and Sarah Jane Shirley. He married Ella Isabel Clunie on 5 November 1907, in Wairoa, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. He died on 22 September 1953, in his hometown, at the age of 74, and was buried in New Zealand.
