Mathias Schlaepfer was born on 12 October 1853, in Trogen, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Switzerland as the son of Matthias Schlaepfer and Anna Magdalena Alder. He married Anna Elisabeth Frischknecht on 6 October 1890. He died on 4 July 1944, at the age of 90.
