1901 · Spindletop Oilfield Discovered

"Spindletop, located south of Beaumont, becomes the first major oil well to be discovered in Texas. Other fields were discovered in shortly after, which ultimately led to the highly impactful ""oil boom""."

1901 · Poll Tax Law is Passed

The state legislature passed a new law in 1901 that added the payment of a poll tax as a requirement for voting. It was a deliberate political move that drastically reduced voting participation by African Americans, Mexican Americans, and poor whites. More than a third of the (otherwise eligible) voting population was now disenfranchised from the election process.

Americanized form of Dutch Couwenhoven, a habitational name from the farmhouse Couwenhoven in Hoogland, Utrecht.

History: Wolfert Gerritsz. (van Couwenhoven), settled in 1624–25 as one of the first immigrants from Amersfoort to New-Netherland. By the time the descendants of original Dutch settlers on Long Island had reached western PA, the name Couwenhoven had evolved into Conover.
