When St. Clair McKelway was born on 13 February 1905, in Charlotte, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, United States, his father, Alexander Jeffery II McKelway, was 38 and his mother, Lavina Rutherford Smith, was 40. He married Estelle Cassidy on 5 December 1929, in Japan. They were the parents of at least 1 son. He immigrated to Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1940 and lived in Washington, District of Columbia, United States for about 10 years. He died on 10 January 1980, at the age of 74.
