Scottish: from Older Scots chalmer ‘chamberlain’; compare Chambers . The mb was assimilated to mm; the l was purely graphic, indicating that the preceding a was long.

English: possibly a localized form of Challinor (see Challender ), with dissimilation of ln to lm in Chalner.
