When Christian Grossenbacher was born on 18 February 1844, in Affoltern im Emmental, Bern, Switzerland, his father, Niklaus Grossenbacher, was 23 and his mother, Magdalena Grossenbacher, was 23. He married Anna Maria Schaer on 13 November 1868. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 13 February 1909, at the age of 64.
