1881 · Construction of the Fort Worth & Denver Railway

Age 5

Grenville M. Dodge oversaw the construction of the Fort Worth & Denver Railway. Work began at Hodge Junction, and eventually extended to the New Mexico border by 1888. Service began on April 1, 1888, with trains travelling between Fort Worth and Denver.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Age 5

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

English (Wiltshire and Gloucestershire) and German: from an ancient Germanic personal name, Holbert, Hulbert (Old English Holdbeorht), composed of the elements hold, huld ‘friendly, gracious’ + berht ‘bright, famous’. Old English names in Hold- are rare and late, only Holdburh and Holdfrith (both female) and Holdwine being recorded in independent use.
