He married Adelgunda Dietzel on 6 January 1839, in Wasungen, Saxe-Meiningen, Germany. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 7 daughters. He immigrated to Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, United States in 1845 and lived in Salt Lake, Utah, United States in 1860. He died on 11 March 1897, in Morgan, Morgan, Utah, United States, at the age of 78, and was buried in North Morgan Cemetery, Morgan, Morgan, Utah, United States.
