He married Elisabeth Hood on 20 June 1820, in Carmi Township, White, Illinois, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Jefferson, Illinois, United States in 1820. He died on 8 October 1865, in St. George, Washington, Utah, United States, at the age of 69, and was buried in Saint George City Cemetery, St. George, Washington, Utah, United States.

The First capital was temporary in New York City but by the second term of George Washington the Capital moved to Philadelphia for the following 10 years.
