    Americanized form of Dutch Couwenhoven, a habitational name from the farmhouse Couwenhoven in Hoogland, Utrecht.History: Wolfert Gerritsz. (van Couwenhoven), settled in 1624–25 as one of the first immigrants from Amersfoort to New-Netherland. By the time the descendants of original Dutch settlers on Long Island had reached western PA, the name Couwenhoven had evolved into Conover.
