Of early Christian origin, referring to ‘Our Lady of Carmel’, a title of the Virgin Mary. Carmel is the name (meaning ‘garden’ or ‘orchard’ in Hebrew) of a mountain in the Holy Land near modern Haifa, which was populated from very early Christian times by hermits. They were later organized into the Carmelite order of monks. The name is used mainly by Roman Catholics.
