1980 · Prison Riot at New Mexico State Penitentiary

Age 6

One of the deadliest prison riots in the U.S. occurred at the New Mexico State Penitentiary in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The inmates took complete control of the prison and twelve officers were held hostage. Several of the inmates killed other inmates, while others were being tortured and mutilated because they acted as informants for prison authorities. After 36 hours control was regained. The riot ended with 33 inmates dead and more than 200 treated for injuries. None of the officers taken hostage were killed but 7 suffered serious injuries.
