John McGann was born from 1859 to 1863 as the son of Michael H McGann and Johanna Murray. He married Bernardine Harder on 15 September 1888, in Orleans, Louisiana, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 daughter. He died on 17 March 1933, in Louisiana, United States, and was buried in St. Louis Cemetery #3, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, United States.

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
