When Thomas Monroe was born on 18 July 1928, in Cobbtown, Tattnall, Georgia, United States, his father, Marshall Monroe, was 21 and his mother, Phinas Collins, was 17. He lived in Tattnall, Georgia, United States in 1935 and District 1736, Candler, Georgia, United States in 1940. He died on 12 February 2006, in Macon, Houston, Georgia, United States, at the age of 77, and was buried in Mount Olive Church Cemetery, Aline, Candler, Georgia, United States.

1942 · Germans Sink Ships Near St. Simons Island

Lights from homes along the coast of St. Simons Island provided a clear view of the SS Oklahoma for German U-boat Captain Reinhard Hardegen on April 8, 1942. A German torpedo was fired at the SS Oklahoma shortly after midnight. An hour later, a second torpedo was fired at the oil tanker Esso Baton Rouge. Both ships sunk and the attacks left 22 seamen dead. After the incident, residents of the Golden Isles panicked over concern of a German Invasion of the coast and were stringently observant of a nighttime blackout.

Scottish: variant of Munro .

Irish: variant of Mulroy .

History: Scottish bearers of this name are descended from Donald O’Kane, who in the 11th century migrated from the mouth of the Roe to Ferrindonald in Cromarty, Scotland. There his descendants, as barons of Foulis and vassals of the earls of Ross, held lands along the Firth of Cromarty. James Monroe (1758–1831), 5th president of the US (1817–25), came from a cadet branch of this family.
