When Elmer Herbert McGillivary was born in 1895, his father, William Johnston McGillivary, was 22 and his mother, Edith Jane Welch, was 27. He married Lilian Best on 31 October 1916, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, British Colonial America. He lived in Providence, Rhode Island, United States in 1935 and Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island, United States in 1935. He died in 1955, at the age of 60, and was buried in Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island, United States.

1895 · College Hall Catches on Fire

On January 27, 1895, College Hall catches on fire and is fully consumed within one hour. During the fire, many students and faculty work together to save many of the items in the building. Some of these are library books. They save the books by piling them onto the rugs and dragging them out of the burning building. College Hall is then later rebuilt and renamed Davis Hall after Governor John W. Davis.

1896 · Plessy vs. Ferguson

A landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities if the segregated facilities were equal in quality. It's widely regarded as one of the worst decisions in U.S. Supreme Court history.
