1998 · The Lewinsky scandal

Age 2

Causing an Uproar throughout the nation, the sex scandal between, then, 49-year-old Bill Clinton and 22-year-old Monica Lewinsky came into light. Found in this scandal was acts of perjury from the president and Bill Clinton became the second president to be considered for impeachment. He was later acquitted on his charges and continued out the rest of his Presidency in civil contempt of court.

1999 · The Y2K Computer Bug

The computer Bug of the new millennium was a serious issue for some businesses throughout the world. Caused by a Code error that didn’t allow the calendar year to be rolled over from 1999 to 2000. This caused many error in displays and some existing computer databases.

Global War on Terror is begun. Shortly after the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush called on Afghanistan's leaders to hand over Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders and close their terrorist training camps. President Bush also demanded the return of all detained foreign nationals and the opening of terrorist training sites to inspection. Ten of these demands were rejected by the Afghan government.

The places are all named with Old English ford ‘ford’ as the final element, but have different initial elements. The Staffordshire placename has Old English stæth ‘river bank, shore’; Stafford in Colyton (Devon) has Old English stān ‘stone, rock’; the Sussex placename has Old English stēor ‘steer, bullock’; East and West Stowford (Devon) have Old English stæf ‘staff, stave, rod’; Stafford in Dolton and Stafford in Broadhembury (Devon) may have Old English stæth, stān, or stæf.
