When Lena Zephra White was born in 1898, in Iowa, United States, her father, Samuel Talbert White, was 23 and her mother, Grace Emerald Metcalf, was 21. She lived in Mission Township, Brown, Kansas, United States in 1910 and Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri, United States in 1930. She died on 10 June 1956, at the age of 58, and was buried in Independence, Jackson, Missouri, United States.

1898 · War with the Spanish

After the explosion of the USS Maine in the Havana Harbor in Cuba, the United States engaged the Spanish in war. The war was fought on two fronts, one in Cuba, which helped gain their independence, and in the Philippines, which helped the US gain another territory for a time.

1913 · The Completion of the Keokuk Dam

The Keokuk Dam was completed in 1913 and began to power the surrounding area. It was the largest single capacity powerhouse in the world at the time. After World War II, the powerhouse was modernized and all the units were converted in 2002. It remains the largest privately owned and operated dam on the Mississippi River.

1916 · The First woman elected into the US Congress

Jeannette Pickering Rankin became the first woman to hold a federal office position in the House of Representatives, and remains the only woman elected to Congress by Montana.

In some cases it is perhaps from a Middle English survival of the Old English personal name Hwīta, a short form of names in Hwīt- (from hwīt ‘white’). The name may also be topographic, referring to someone who lived by a bend or curve in a river or road (from Old English wiht ‘bend’), the source of the placename of Great Whyte in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire (compare Wight ). This name is also a variant of Wight . The surname White is also very common among African Americans.
