1963 · The Great March to Freedom

    Age 5

"The Walk to Freedom was a mass march during the Civil Rights Movement on June 23. It drew crowds of 125,000 people and was known as """"the largest civil rights demonstration in the nation's history"""" up to that date. Various ministers, including Martin Luther King Jr., and leaders of local and national organizations gave speeches or were in attendance. The march was partly a practice run of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, led by Martin Luther King Jr. Due to the greater size of the March on Washington, the Detroit Walk to Freedom has been somewhat lost to obscurity outside of local Detroit history. The march was planned to honor the 20th anniversary of Detroit Race Riot and to honor those who died during the riot."
