    1955 · The Civil Rights Movement Begins

    Age 1

    The civil rights movement was a movement to enforce constitutional and legal rights for African Americans that the other Americans enjoyed. By using nonviolent campaigns, those involved secured new recognition in laws and federal protection of all Americans. Moderators worked with Congress to pass of several pieces of legislation that overturned discriminatory practices.

    1955 · To War in Vietnam

    The Vietnam War was another civil war brought about from the Cold War. It was fought between the North Vietnamese, who were supported by the Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies, and the South Vietnamese, who were supported by the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand and other anti-communist allies. The war caused two more civil wars in Laos and Cambodia and resulted in all three countries becoming communist states.

    The American Indian Movement is a Native American advocacy group that was formed to address the affirmation, treaty issues, spirituality and leadership of the Native Americans in the area. They addressed incidents of police harassment and racism against the Natives and strove to create real economic independence for the Indians. Decades after its founding, the American Indian Movement has continued to fight for the interests of the indigenous groups around the world.
