    From an old Germanic female personal name composed of hild ‘battle’ + gard ‘enclosure’. It was borne by the second wife of Charlemagne and by the mystical writer Hildegard of Bingen ( 1098–1179 ), in whose music and writings there has been great interest in recent decades.
