    1959 · Research Triangle Park Opens

    Age 1

    High-tech growth happened when in 1959 the research triangle park was opened. The park goes between Raleigh, Burham, and Chapel Hill.

    1965 · Stone Mountain Monument

    Age 7

    A memorial carving on the side of a quartz monzonite dome in Stone Mountain depicts Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. The dome rises 825 feet above ground and is the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world. Stone Mountain Park opened on April 14, 1965, 100 years to the day of Lincoln’s assassination. The park spans 3,200 acres and is Georgia’s most popular attraction.

    Name Meaning

    English: habitational name from any of numerous places called Walton, which are named with Old English walh ‘foreigner, Briton, serf’ (genitive plural wala), wald ‘woodland’, wall ‘wall’, or wælla ‘well, spring, stream’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’.

    History: George Walton (1741–1804) signed the Declaration of Independence. He was born in Prince Edward County, VA, whither his grandfather had emigrated from England in 1682. He moved to Savannah, GA, and became governor of GA and a prominent jurist.
