1955 · The Civil Rights Movement Begins

Age 1

The civil rights movement was a movement to enforce constitutional and legal rights for African Americans that the other Americans enjoyed. By using nonviolent campaigns, those involved secured new recognition in laws and federal protection of all Americans. Moderators worked with Congress to pass of several pieces of legislation that overturned discriminatory practices.
1961 · The Freedom Riders

Age 7

Civil rights activists known as The Freedom Riders rode buses into segregated southern states to ensure the Supreme Court’s ruling that segregated public buses were unconstitutional was being upheld. The first Freedom Ride left from Washington D.C. on May 4, 1961, and traveled to New Orleans. One bus arrived in Birmingham on May 14 and was met by a white mob. The mob attacked the bus, slashed the tires, broke the windows, and threw a bomb onto the bus. The Freedom Riders barely escaped the flames. The Freedom Riders continued on and encountered segregation and violence and brought national attention to disregard of federal laws in the South.
1970 · U.S. Space & Rocket Center Opens

Age 16

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center opened in Huntsville in 1970. Dr. Wernher von Braun opened the facility that is now the second largest research park in the United States. The team developed rockets to send the first U.S. satellite and men to the moon. The facility's museum houses over 1,500 items and has over 600,000 visitors annually.
