Name Meaning

Americanized form of Norwegian Haraldsen and, in some cases, also of Swedish Haraldsson (see Haraldson ). Compare Harelson and Harralson .

History: The first known bearer of the surname Harrelson was Paul Harrelson, Sr (in some sources his surname is spelled Harralson), born in the middle of the 17th century in Denmark or Norway (Norway was in a union with Denmark at that time), who in the 1670s or 1680s settled in New Kent County, VA. There appears to be only a few later immigrants from Norway or Sweden, whose Americanized surname was spelled the same way.
