Jacob Empey was born on 9 June 1840, in Maryborough, Wellington, Ontario, Canada as the son of Philip Empey and Catharine Empey. He married Metilda Ann Orser on 25 February 1879, in Ameliasburgh, Prince Edward, Ontario, Canada. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters. He lived in Brighton, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada in 1871 and Hastings, Percy Township, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada in 1901. He died on 19 September 1905, in Trenton, Quinte West, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 65, and was buried in Trent Port, Hastings, Upper Canada, British Colonial America.

    In 1883, there was a mining boom in Northern Ontario when mineral deposits were found near Sudbury. Thomas Flanagan was the blacksmith for the Canadian Pacific Railway that noticed the deposits in the river.
