When Julius Augustus Furer was born on 9 October 1880, in St. Croix, Wisconsin, United States, his father, Ernst Friedrich Edmund Fuerer, was 40 and his mother, Caroline Louise Friedricke Wedemeier, was 29. He married Helen Carlin Emery on 12 May 1927, in Fredericktown, East Bethlehem Township, Washington, Pennsylvania, United States. He lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States in 1935 and Washington, Washington County, District of Columbia, United States in 1950. He died on 5 June 1963, in District of Columbia, United States, at the age of 82, and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, United States.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

1883 · The Newhall House Hotel Fire

A fire erupted on January 10, 1883, at the Newhall Hotel in Milwaukee. The fire began at 4:00 am in an elevator shaft and raced up through the building. The fire spread so quickly that many could not escape. General and Mrs. Tom Thumb, stars of P.T. Barnum's circus, were guests in the hotel at the time of the fire. A firefighter reached them by ladder and they were able to escape safely. The exact number of deaths remains unknown as the hotel register was destroyed in the fire, however, the death toll is estimated between 75-90.
