Age 6

On July 19, 1870 France declared war on Prussia the south German states. The French forces were only 200,000 strong while the Prussian forces were 400,000. On September 1, 1870 the Battle of Sedan took place and Napoleon III along with 83,000 forces surrendered to the Germans. After this happened on October 7 the French minister made an escape from Paris in a balloon. Twenty days later Paris was seized.

When the second empire fell the third republic took over. This saw the suppression of Paris Commune and Constitutional Laws. During this time the Dreyfus Affair took place. This was also during the time of WWI.
