1842 · Mines and Collieries Act of 1842

The Parliment of the United Kingdom passed the Mines and Collieries Act of 1842, mostly commonly known as the Mines Act of 1842. This act made it so that nobody under the age of ten could work in the mines and also females in general could not be employed.

19th-century coinage, representing a Latinate feminine form of Edwin or, in at least one case, of Edward . Edwina Ashley ( 1901–60 ), a descendant of Lord Shaftesbury who became the wife of Earl Mountbatten , was so named in honour of Edward VII ; the king had originally wished her to be called Edwardina.
