When James Leon Wentworth was born on 9 December 1895, in Burnham, Waldo, Maine, United States, his father, James Carver Wentworth, was 35 and his mother, Leona Mary Parsons, was 31. He married Helen Jeanette Rollins on 9 December 1934, in Maine, United States. He lived in Somerset, Maine, United States in 1935 and Sangerville, Piscataquis, Maine, United States in 1940. He registered for military service in 1918. He died on 9 May 1977, in Skowhegan, Somerset, Maine, United States, at the age of 81, and was buried in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Blue Star Avenue, Augusta, Kennebec, Maine, United States.

1896 · Plessy vs. Ferguson

A landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities if the segregated facilities were equal in quality. It's widely regarded as one of the worst decisions in U.S. Supreme Court history.

1898 · Sinking of USS Maine

During the Cuban War for Independence, the USS Maine had been sent to Havana to look out for the interests of the United States. On February 15, 1898, at approximately 21:40, an explosion on USS Maine was caused by roughly 5 long tons of powder. The front of the ship was demolished and the remains quickly sunk to the bottom of the ocean. 260 men lost their lives in the explosion itself, with at least six more dying afterwards from related injuries. The event kicked off an atmosphere of contention that would eventually lead to the Spanish-American War.
