He married Emma Magnuson on 5 July 1902, in Elkhart, Elkhart, Indiana, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons. He lived in Norrö, Jönköping, Sweden for about 5 years. He died on 16 May 1961, in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States, at the age of 86.

1875 · A Treaty with Hawaii

In the Mid 1870s, The United States sought out the Kingdom of Hawaii to make a free trade agreement. The Treaty gave the Hawaiians access to the United States agricultural markets and it gave the United States a part of land which later became Pearl Harbor.

1885 · The World's First Skyscraper

The Home Insurance Building is considered to be the first skyscraper in the world. It was supported both inside and outside by steel and metal that were deemed fireproof and also it was reinforced with concrete. It originally had ten stories but in 1891 two more were added.

1897 · The Union Loop Elevated

The Loop was born in political scandal that combined the three elevated railways around Chicago and combined them into one. The scandal was to raise the fares for commuters so state legislators could receive more money while in office.
