    Name Meaning

English: probably a habitational name from Gatchell Farm in Trull (Somerset) but the place is not on record before the 18th century and may have been named from the surname, for which no evidence has been found before the early 16th century. The surname is now rare in Britain.

In some cases also an Americanized form of German or Swiss German Götschel (see Goetschel ).

History: John and Samuel Gatchell or Getchell emigrated to North America from southwestern England in 1635.
