He married Mabel Susan Griffith on 14 September 1905, in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, United States. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 2 daughters. He died in March 1964, in New Castle, Delaware, United States, at the age of 85.

1881 · The Assassination of James Garfield

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.

1893 · First U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain

The first time that the rank of Ambassador was used was in 1893. When on March 30, 1893, Thomas F. Bayard was appointed Ambassador to Great Britain.

1901 · Assassination of Mckinley

President William McKinley was shot at the Temple of Music, in the Pan-American Exposition, while shaking hands with the public. Leon Czolgosz shot him twice in the abdomen because he thought it was his duty to do so. McKinley died after eight days of watch and care. He was the third American president to be assassinated. After his death, Congress passed legislation to officially make the Secret Service and gave them responsibility for protecting the President at all times.
