    Name Meaning

Americanized form of Dutch Krankheyt: from an abstract noun meaning ‘weakness’, hence probably a nickname for a sickly individual. The surname Krankheyt is no longer found in the Netherlands. Compare Conkright , Conkwright , Cronkite , and Cronkright .

History: The ancestor of the American Cronkhite, Cronkite, and several other families was Herck Syboutsen Krankheyt from the Netherlands, who settled in the middle of the 17th century in what is now New York, then the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam.
