1965 · Stone Mountain Monument

A memorial carving on the side of a quartz monzonite dome in Stone Mountain depicts Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. The dome rises 825 feet above ground and is the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world. Stone Mountain Park opened on April 14, 1965, 100 years to the day of Lincoln’s assassination.
