The infamous radio debut of War of the Worlds (an adaptation of the novel by Orson Welles) was broadcast from New Jersey. The drama program was framed as a news broadcast describing an alien invasion, which reportedly caused panic among a small subset of listeners that tuned in late. However, the newspaper industry exaggerated reports of the confusion to make it sound widespread.
