The International Writing Program was founded by Paul Engle and Hualing Nieh Engle as a non-academic, internationally focused writing program. In its life, it has hosted over 1,500 poets, novelists, dramatists, essayists, and journalists from more than 150 countries. Under the Engles' guidance, hundreds of writers have come to Iowa, from parts of the world where literary and personal freedoms are often restricted. For their efforts to connect writers worldwide, the Engles were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976.
1978 · Elk Rock State Park

Elk Rock State Park was founded as a state park in 1978, after the completion of the Red Rock Reservoir. The park is significant because its history dates back five thousand years when the Sac and Fox tribes granted white settlers rights to the grounds in 1842. The old historic town of Red Rock lies at the bottom of the lake and is commonly apart of diving expeditions in the summer.
