1877 · The First Workers Strike

The country was in great economic distress in mid-1877, which caused many workers of the Railroad to come together and began the first national strike in the United States. Crowds gathered in Chicago in extreme number to be a part of the strike which was later named the Great Railroad Strike. Shortly after the strike began, the battle was fought between the authorities and many of the strikers. The conflict escalated to violence and quickly each side turned bloody.

1877 · First National Strike in U.S. Begins In Pittsburgh Against Pennsylvania Railroad

Coming out of an economic crisis, everyone was worried when cuts started happening in the railroad. They went on what would the great railroad strike of 1877.

1885 · The First Skyscraper

The Home Insurance Building is considered to be the first skyscraper in the world. It was supported both inside and outside by steel and metal that were deemed fireproof and also it was reinforced with concrete. It originally had ten stories but in 1891 two more were added.

habitational name from Hewitts in Chelsfield or Hewitts in Willesborough (both Kent), both named from Old English hīewett ‘cutting’, denoting a place where trees had been cut down. Here there lived families called de la Hewatte (1270), de la hewett (1301), and atte Hewete (1338). The name may also be topographic for someone who lived in a newly made clearing in a wood.
