This represents at least two Old English personal names which have fallen together: the male name Aðelgēat (composed of the elements aðel ‘noble’ + Gēat, a tribal name; see Jocelyn ), and the female personal name Aðelgȳð (composed of the elements aðel ‘noble’ + gȳð ‘battle’).
