1896 · Plessy vs. Ferguson

A landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court upholding the constitutionality of racial segregation laws for public facilities if the segregated facilities were equal in quality. It's widely regarded as one of the worst decisions in U.S. Supreme Court history.

1913 · The Completion of the Keokuk Dam

The Keokuk Dam was completed in 1913 and began to power the surrounding area. It was the largest single capacity powerhouse in the world at the time. After World War II, the powerhouse was modernized and all the units were converted in 2002. It remains the largest privately owned and operated dam on the Mississippi River.

1926 · Iowa becomes a provider of food to the world

Pioneer Hi-Bred International was the leader company experimenting with hybridization of corn and other seeds for agriculture in the world. It helped make different kinds of crop able to grow in harsh conditions so that other parts of the world would be able to farm and become self-sufficient. It was bought out by DuPont in 1999 and has continued to help struggling countries around the world.

Name Meaning

English: either from the plural form of Holme , or else a variant of Holme or Home , with excrescent -s (see Holm ).

Scottish: probably a habitational name from Holmes near Dundonald (Ayrshire), or possibly from another place so called in the barony of Inchestuir (Angus). Both placenames likely derive from the plural form of Middle English, Older Scots holm ‘islet, raised land in a marsh’ (see Holm ).

Scottish and Irish: adopted for Scottish Gaelic and Irish Mac Thómais, Mac Thómais (see McComb ). In parts of western Ireland, Holmes is also a variant of Cavish, from Gaelic Mac Thámhais, another patronymic from Thomas . Early bearers in Ireland were probably immigrants from Scotland.
