1838 · Jenners Department Store Opens its doors

Jenners was founded by Charles Jenner as a department store for the community. The original building was destroyed by a fire in 1892 but, with a new design in mind, the store was reopened in 1895 with new features. It was named Harrods of the North after it was given Royal Warrant in 1911 and was visited by Queen Elizabeth II on its 150th anniversary. It was sold to the House of Fraser in 2005, which in 2008, made much needed improvements to the store.

1874 · Patronage abolished in the Church of Scotland.

The Church Patronage Act 1874 was passed by Parliament and amended and altered the laws relating to the Appointment of Ministers to Parishes in Scotland. Paragraphs spelled out definitions to prevent the Act being subverted by processes used by Patrons and clarified that the Church of Scotland would decide on the qualifications required for Ministers.

English and Scottish: occupational name for an archer, hunter or soldier armed with a bow, from Middle English bow(e)man, bouman (from Old English boga ‘bow’ + mann ‘man’). This word was distinguished from Bowyer , which denoted a maker or seller of bows.
