1896 · Plessy vs. Ferguson

1903 · Ford Motor Company

Age 12

"Henry Ford built his first gasoline-powered vehicle, named the Quadricycle, in 1896, at his home in Detroit. Ford sold the Quadricycle for $200 and used the money to build a second car. In 1901, Ford raced his car ""Sweepstakes"" against Alexander Winton and won. The victory resulted in publicity for Ford which allowed him to gain investors for his new company, Ford Motor Company. The first Model A was sold on July 23, 1903, and the company was incorporated on November 13, 1903."

History: As a name of Swiss German origin, originally spelled Kaufmann (see 1 above), the surname Kauffman is very common among the American Mennonites and Amish; variants, such as Kaufman and Coffman , are also found. The main progenitors of the Mennonite bearers of this name were of Swiss ancestry, but came to PA (Lancaster and Berks counties) from the Palatinate, Germany, in the 18th century. Later Mennonite immigrants bearing this name came to the US also from Galicia and Volhynia in Eastern Europe.
