1875 · A Treaty with Hawaii

Norwegian: habitational name from farmsteads in Trøndelag and Valdres named Holien; the Trōndelag name is possibly from Old Norse hór ‘high’ + lið ‘slope’, ‘mountain’, while the Valdres one is from Old Norse Holvin, a compound of hol ‘hollow’, ‘sunken’, ‘deep’ + vin ‘meadow’.
