History: A family of this name have held the title Earl of Harrington since 1742, and were Earls of Chesterfield from 1628–1967. Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield, was a Royalist soldier in the English Civil War. He was captured in 1643 and died in prison in 1656.
