The Luguo Bridge, commonly called the Marco Polo Bridge, completed construction in 1698. The total length of the bridge is 266.5 meters, and it has a width of 9.3 meters. The original bridge had been completed back in 1192. The Kangxi Emperor ordered the reconstruction of the bridge, primarily in response to extreme flooding that had caused damage. Centuries later, Marco Polo would praise the structure, leading to its current nickname.

The Qing Dynasty and Tibetan armies fought against each other on January 28, 1701, during the Battle of Dartsedo (a border town in southwest China). After Tibetans had killed several Qing soldiers and destroyed bridges, the Emperor responded by sending over 2000 Manchu Bannermen to attack the city from 3 different directions. The Qing forces quickly overpowered the garrison and then slaughtered most of the men in the town. Tibet would fall under Qing rule by 1720.
