He married Lydia Redmon on 16 March 1899, in Clark, Kentucky, United States. They were the parents of at least 1 son. He lived in Georgetown, Scott, Kentucky, United States in 1910. He died on 1 July 1940, in Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky, United States, at the age of 64, and was buried in Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky, United States.

Garfield was shot twice by Charles J. Guitea at Railroad Station in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1881. After eleven weeks of intensive and other care Garfield died in Elberon, New Jersey, the second of four presidents to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln.
