Name Meaning

A name imported from France, as in Gaston de Foix. The surname has been written as De la Garston, which could derive from Anglo-Saxon "garstun," or grass enclosure. The name Garstin has also been used, which could be from the Old Norman personal name Geirsteinn. But Gaston is more probably from the French word "gaston," or like the Parisian names Gastot, Gasteau, Gastal, a diminutive of the name Gast, from "gast," which may come from Latin "vastus," meaning huge or burly. Some have translated the old word "gastos" as savant or sage and have connected the word to the old Gaulish names Wisogastus, Husegastus, Salegastus, and Losogastus, who wrote the Salic Law.
