The Life of Niu

When Niu Fatai was born in 1919, in Ha'apai, Tonga, his father, Semisi Fatai, was 37 and his mother, Kalolaine F Fatai, was 26. He married Fakaloloma Tupou on 24 January 1973, in Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu, Tonga. He died in 2003, in New Zealand, at the age of 84, and was buried in New Zealand.

1923 · New Zealand's Claim to Antartica

Age 4

The Ross Dependency is a New Zealand dependency located on the Antarctician Continent. It is the only settlement on the Antartica that is claimed by a sovereign nation. New Zealand still owns claim even after the Antarctic Treaty that was signed in 1959 by 11 other nations.

Age 24

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt visited New Zealand during the calmer years of World War II in the Pacific. It was the first time that a first lady of the United States had visited the country alone without their husband. 

Name Meaning

1 Southern Italian: possibly a variant of Fato, a short form of Bonifato ( see Bonifacio ), but more likely a nickname from fata, meaning ‘fairy’ in standard Italian or ‘praying mantis’ in Calabriandialect.2 Hungarian (Fáta): from the old pagan personal name Fáta.
