Irish and English: from the Middle English personal name Col(e)man, Old Irish Colmán, earlier Columbán, adopted as Old Norse Kalman. It was introduced into Cumbria, Westmorland, and Yorkshire by Norwegians from Ireland and probably spread widely across England.
