When David Aeschlimann was born on 7 November 1778, in Langnau im Emmental, Bern, Switzerland, his father, Christen Aeschlimann, was 35 and his mother, Dorothea Bratschi, was 27. He married Marianna Pfäffli on 24 January 1828, in Biglen, Bern, Switzerland. He died in his hometown.

Americanized form of Swiss German Aeschlimann: topographic name for someone who lived near a (small) ash tree or ash wood, from Esche (Old High German asc) ‘ash’ + the diminutive suffix -li + -mann ‘man’, or perhaps a derivative of Öschli, a pet form of a vernacular form of the personal name Oswald .
