No Civil War battles took place within the state boundaries of New Jersey, but its citizens participated extensively in the war. Volunteers that were turned away ended up serving in the militias of nearby states like Pennsylvania and New York. Whenever President Lincoln requested more troops, New Jersey responded quickly. In total, the state contributed over 88,000 soldiers (6,000 of which died).

The Battle of Gettysburg involved the largest number of casualties of the entire Civil war and is often described as the war's turning point. Between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers lost their lives during the three-day Battle. To honor the fallen soldiers, President Abraham Lincoln read his historic Gettysburg Address and helped those listening by redefining the purpose of the war.

1 English and Welsh (very common in southern England and South Wales): patronymic from the medieval English personal name Harry , pet form of Henry .2 This name is also well established in Ireland, taken there principally during the Plantation of Ulster. In some cases, particularly in families coming from County Mayo, both Harris and Harrison can be Anglicized forms of Gaelic Ó hEarchadha.3 Greek: reduced form of the Greek personal name Kharalambos, composed of the elements khara ‘joy’ + lambein ‘to shine’.
